Smartphone users can use Wi-Fi calling, which offers a solution for talking and sending messages in places where it is difficult to reach a mobile phone signal. You can find answers to questions about this technology that will make our lives easier in this article.

What is Wi-Fi Calling on a Mobile Phone?

Wi-Fi calling is a voice service that allows users to make and receive calls over a wireless internet connection instead of using a cellular signal. Wi-Fi calling allows your phone to automatically switch to Wi-Fi to make or answer a call when cellular service is poor.

This service is available on most Android and iOS devices, and the user experience is similar to other phone calls. Wi-Fi calling and messaging, also called VoWiFi, uses a Wi-Fi network instead of a cellular network to make and receive calls over the internet.

How Does Wi-Fi Calling Work?

Wi-Fi calling works similarly to how Wi-Fi-enabled applications such as Skype or WhatsApp, which are supported by voice over internet protocol (VoIP), with slight differences.

  • When Wi-Fi calling is enabled, your phone will automatically identify the strongest available network after you place a call. It will then route the call over either the cellular network or Wi-Fi network, whichever is stronger during the call.
  • For Wi-Fi calling to work, it must be supported by the smartphone.
  • Phone calls can be made using the person’s phone number; There is no need for an additional number. Wi-Fi calling allows you to make phone calls and send text messages over wireless internet networks instead of the 4G or 5G mobile signal you normally use, which is generated by cell phone towers.
  • Any Wi-Fi network is compatible with the service. This includes the internet we use at home, as well as that available publicly in cafes, airports and train stations.
  • Any calls you make and messages you send via Wi-Fi calling will appear normally in your regular message app and call logs.
  • If the user wants to make sure that their call is using Wi-Fi calling, they can also turn their phone on airplane mode.

It allows you to seamlessly switch between Wi-Fi calling and 4G/5G calling, so your call won’t be dropped when you go out of Wi-Fi coverage.

How to Make a Wi-Fi Call from a Phone?

In order to use this technology, your smartphone and your phone’s SIM card must be connected to 4.5G technology. If your SIM card is not compatible with 4.5G technology, you need to go to your current operator and change your SIM card. After completing these procedures, you can activate the Wi-Fi calling feature by following the steps below:

  • Go to your phone’s Settings menu.
  • Tap Connections or Network & Internet.
  • Find and click Wi-Fi calling or Wi-Fi Calling.
  • To turn off Wi-Fi calling, drag the slider to the left or tap the On/Off switch.
  • You will see a notification on the screen when the Wi-Fi calling feature is turned off.

After completing these steps, you can make your call over Wi-Fi as if you were making a normal call. Enabling and disabling Wi-Fi calling may vary depending on the device.

Is Wi-Fi Calling Paid?

This depends on the application you are calling from and the internet package you are using. Some apps allow you to make calls over Wi-Fi at no extra cost. However, if you make a call using your regular phone line, you will be charged according to your carrier’s rate. Therefore, before making a Wi-Fi call, you should make sure that the application supports this feature and that your internet package is sufficient.

How to Turn Off Wi-Fi Calling?

Turning this feature off or on may vary depending on the device and operating system. You can follow the steps below to turn off Wi-Fi Calling on Android and iOS devices:

Android:

  • Go to Settings:Open the Settings application on the home screen of your device.
  • Find the Connections or Networks and Internet option:You can usually find the Wi-Fi Calling or Wi-Fi Calling option in this section.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi Calling:Find the Wi-Fi Calling option and disable it.

iOS (iPhone):

  • Go to Settings:Open the Settings app on your home screen.
  • Go to the Phone option:Find the “Phone” option in Settings.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi Calling:Find the “Wi-Fi Calling” option and disable it.

If you are in a place that does not have a mobile signal but has a Wi-Fi connection, such as a subway station, you can use this technology to make a call by simply connecting your smartphone to the network. With Wi-Fi calling, you can make calls and send messages at home, in your office or on public transportation without any interruption in your calls.
